Chinese Mental Health Consultation Services Charitable Trust
In the past ten years, new migrants to New Zealand have been increased especially people with Chinese origin. During the migration process, Chinese migrants face enormous changes which could be challenges. Those challenges could affect not only psychological wellbeing of the Chinese migrants, but also affect their integration in the community. The Chinese Metal Health Consultation Service Trust is a non-profit organization set up in 2006. The main focus is on the psychological wellbeing of Chinese in order to build a balancing and harmony life in New Zealand
Mission Statement
The Chinese Mental Health Consultation Services Trust is a non-profit making charitable organisation. Our mission is to promote the psychological and mental health wellbeing of individuals through the development of a healthy and functional relationship between the individuals and their families.
The Chinese Mental Health Consultation Services Trust is committed to promoting a violence free and safe living family environment. We do not accept or tolerate any form of abusive behaviour.
The organisation is founded by a group of mental health professionals.
Services Provided:
The Chinese Mental Health Consultation Service Trust emphasises on meeting the linguistic, cultural, and clinical needs of our Chinese clients. Over the past 4 years, our Service has developed a number of family oriented initiatives for migrant Chinese and International Students. These initiatives include:
- The “Family Harmony Action Group”- this anti-family violence action group was first founded in 2007 when we secured funding from the Manuaku City Council to provide primary (promotion), secondary (working with clients who are at risk of becoming victims or perpetrators of family-violence) and tertiary intervention (working with people who have been involved in family-violence related incidents). We believe that creating a non violent Chinese community is in line with the ”it is NOT OK” public campaign. Our anti family violence campaign was operated through the Chinese media (by means of public talks, radio and television advertisement, and the development of a Chinese website to this effect). Our aim was to promote a "Zero" tolerance to family violence attitude in order to achieve the Chinese cultural value of " Harmony / Family Prosperity".
- Setting up a Family Service Centre- to provide professional assessment and interventions on families presenting with couple and family relationship issues, and improving parenting skills. Our Counsellors are professionally trained and qualified couple and family therapists. We also have extensive working experience in helping young Chinese people who are experiencing challenges while growing up in a non-Chinese Country. If funding is made available, it is our plan to develop training and workshop package pertaining to the above issues in the future.
- A cultural Centre for professionals- provide workshops, training and cultural/clinical advice to mainstream clinicians and Interpreters on skills in working with Chinese families.
- “Chinese Youths Cross Cultural Ambassador” program. This Group Programme aims at assisting young Chinese settlers/students (who are born overseas) to facilitate the process of acculturation, settle better to the new life in New Zealand and overcome the potential cultural conflicts.
Other Services provided include mental health assessment and intervention.
